Indoor Composting

Composting during the cold Winter season can be a pain. It's cold, it's wet, and your dressed like you're about to go skiing. Sludging around through your outdoor compost is the last thing you want to be doing; but you know inside it needs to be done. But why compost outdoors, when you can start your own indoors compost.

There are 2 routes you can take when it comes to indoor composting: with bugs or without bugs. If you don't mind a few little critters inside the house, in your compost of course, then the former may be your choice. It's also a lot cheaper to work with the bugs, but I'll go into that a bit later when I bring up the 'without bugs' method.

With Bugs

Now if you're interested in using the bugs, you may find this article quite helpful. The author goes into detail on how to create an indoor compost, and even goes on to include step by step instructions on how to create this indoor compost. But you will notice that the author expresses the need to use red worms. This method is quite productful, and if you follow her instructions you're almost guaranteed a healthy compost in months. One downfall I felt when managing this type of compost was the need to cater to the bugs. But if you're a bug lover, this style of indoor composting may be the perfect fit.

Without Bugs

If you haven't spent all your money over the holidays on gifts, and composting is up there in priority in your life, the indoor compost created by NatureMill may be the item you're looking for. The great thing about this indoor compost is that it does all the work for you. No more bugs! No more smells! And it fits almost anywhere. It's a small machine that can fit in a kitchen cabinet, and can hold up to 120 lbs of compost material per month. Another positive, is that composting is broken down in 3 easy steps:

  1. Add materials (this thing even takes dairy and fish!)
  2. Let the machine do the work
  3. Fresh compost in 2 weeks, wow!

The machine starts off at $299 and ranges to $399 for the outdoor version. They even cut a deal if you buy 3 or more. Of course, for all of you that like to style your compost machine, the thing comes in a variety of colours. Did I mention that NatureMill provides warranty for these things. Browsing NatureMill's website I noticed that this composting machine has received a ton of positive reviews from big names like Better Homes, Popular Science, Forbes ... the list goes on.

Overall, NatureMill provides a great alternative to manual composting. If you have the money to spend on a compost machine I say go for it and give it a shot.
